Where does the waste from a porta potty actually go after it is pumped?

We have a standard portable toilet on our driveway for our bathroom renovation, and I just watched the vacuum truck pump it out. The driver was efficient, but it got me wondering: where does all that waste actually go after it leaves my property? I know it's not just dumped somewhere, but I'm curious about the whole disposal chain. Does it go to a regular wastewater treatment plant, or is there a special facility for this kind of waste? Also, are there different rules for standard units versus something like a restroom trailer? I'd love to understand the process from pump-out to final disposal.

A vacuum truck pumps the waste from your portable toilet into its tank and hauls it to a wastewater treatment plant.

That waste is called septage. The driver is a permitted hauler and must follow a disposal chain. He takes the load to a municipal wastewater treatment plant or a private facility that accepts septage. The facility charges a tipping fee based on the volume.

There are no different disposal rules for a standard unit versus a restroom trailer. Both produce the same type of waste. The process is identical: the vacuum truck pumps the holding tank and the waste disposal destination is the same.

Treatment plants have strict rules about what can be in the waste. Most now ban formaldehyde, so operators use a formaldehyde-free deodorizer. Dumping septage anywhere else is illegal.
