High-rise build: what if the crane is down on service day?

We have a standard unit on the 15th floor of a high-rise build in Phoenix. The crew of 60 uses it daily. Our rental company does the weekly service visit every Tuesday. The unit gets to the floor and comes down by tower crane.

Now the crane is scheduled for its own maintenance on our next pumping day. The rental company says they need to pump it weekly to prevent overfilling, especially in this heat. A blocked service is a missed service, and I get billed for the trip.

Do you just pay for the missed pump and hope the unit makes it another week? Can you negotiate a credit if the crane is down? Has anyone ever had a unit serviced via a different lift, like a material hoist? I need a plan by Tuesday.

You pay for the missed service. The rental company bills for the trip because the driver and the truck show up, and the unit is inaccessible. In my experience, you cannot negotiate a credit for a crane being down; the contract almost always puts access responsibility on the customer.

A standard unit with a 50 to 70 gallon holding tank for 60 workers is already at the minimum for OSHA 1926.51, which requires one toilet for 20 or fewer workers and one toilet per 40 workers for 20 to 199 workers. In Phoenix heat, usage is heavier and the tank fills faster. Pushing the service a week risks an overfull unit, which is a health hazard and can lead to a messy, expensive cleanup.

You need to find another way to get the unit down. A material hoist is a common solution if it has the capacity and the rigging points. Coordinate with your site superintendent and the hoist operator. If that fails, you may have to accept the missed service charge and plan for an extra cleaning the following week to manage the full tank.
