Restroom trailer for a December 2026 wedding: How do we keep the pipes from freezing?

We're renting a six-stall restroom trailer for a wedding on December 13, 2026. The forecast is calling for overnight lows near 25°F. The trailer has an integrated heater for the interior, which is great, but I'm worried about the fresh water and waste lines that run underneath. The ground is a flat, grassy field, and our water hookup is about 50 feet from the trailer placement spot. A vacuum truck can get within 30 feet for pumping. We'll have 150 guests over about eight hours, with a full catered dinner and an open bar.

What's the best way to protect the external plumbing from freezing? Should we wrap the hoses, or is there a specific type of insulated hose we need to rent? Also, does the waste in the holding tank need any antifreeze added like you do with a standard unit?

The best way to protect the external plumbing is to use insulated water hoses and to keep the trailer's internal heater running continuously. The restroom trailer has an integrated heater that warms the interior space, which helps protect the internal pipes, but the external fresh water supply line and waste line are exposed to the cold. For the 50-foot fresh water hose, you need a specifically designed insulated hose, which the rental company may offer as an add-on. Do not use standard garden hoses; they will freeze solid. You can also wrap the hose in foam insulation tape for extra protection. The waste line, which carries gray water from the sinks to the holding tank, is less likely to freeze if the trailer is in constant use, as the warm water from handwashing will flow through it. The main holding tank for waste, located underneath the trailer, does not typically need antifreeze added like a standard unit because the waste is primarily liquid and the tank is enclosed. Confirm all these winterization steps with your rental company, as their specific model may have different requirements. For a December event, the company should deliver a unit prepared for cold weather.
