October 2026 wedding: will a handwash station freeze overnight?

We're planning our wedding for late October 2026 on my parents' property near Charleston. We'll have about 140 guests, a tent, and a band, and we're renting a few standard portable toilets and a handwash station. The event will run from the afternoon into the evening, with dinner and an open bar. The ground where everything is going is level grass, and the rental truck can park right next to it. My main worry is the overnight temperature. Late October nights here can definitely dip below freezing. The handwash station has a fresh water tank and a drain line, and I'm concerned the water inside will freeze solid before the rental company comes to pick everything up the next day. Will a handwash station freeze overnight if it gets down to, say, 30 degrees? What do rental companies typically do to prevent this for a one-day fall event?

A handwash station usually won't freeze solid from one night that just touches 30, but the pump, the faucet and the drain line can freeze enough to stop working, and that's the part that bites you.

The tank holds a lot of water and it takes a long, hard cold stretch to turn that into a block of ice. The small stuff is different. The foot pump and the little line up to the spout hold only a bit of water, so they go first. If anyone tries to use it at 6am the next morning, the pedal may just not move.

We host fall weddings at our barn and the fix is boring. Ask the rental company to drop it with less fresh water than a full fill, since 140 guests over one afternoon and evening won't empty it anyway. Then after the last guests leave, have someone pump the faucet a few times to clear the line, and leave it alone until pickup. Some companies will also add a non toxic antifreeze to the gray water side for cold nights, so just ask what they do for late season events.

The standard units are less of a worry. The holding tank chemicals handle a light frost fine for one night.
