Construction site locked after hours: leave the porta potty outside the fence, or give the driver a gate code?

We're on a small commercial build for the next couple months. Crew is about a dozen most weekdays. We have one standard unit sitting inside the fenced yard near the trailer. Weekly service has been fine so far.

Problem is the GC locks the gate when everyone leaves, and the service truck keeps showing up early morning before anyone is on site. Driver can't get in, skips the stop, and we notice it by midweek.

Would you leave the unit outside the fence along the curb so the truck can always reach it, even if that puts it closer to the sidewalk? Or is the better move to get the rental company a gate code and keep the unit inside where the crew actually uses it?

Curious what other job sites do when access and weekly service fight each other.

Give the driver a gate code. A standard unit placed inside the fence is the right call for a dozen workers, which meets the OSHA requirement of one toilet for 1 to 20 employees. The unit is where the crew needs it, and it's protected from public tampering or vandalism.

Leaving it outside the fence along the curb is a bad idea. People walking by will use it, which fills the holding tank faster than your crew alone. That forces more frequent service, which increases the rental cost. It also risks damage or tipping from kids messing around. The rental company's contract likely requires clear truck access on service day, and a locked gate counts as a blocked unit. They bill for the missed trip anyway.

On every site I service with a locked gate, the superintendent provides a code or a lockbox combo. Coordinate with the rental company to confirm the driver's usual arrival window, and make sure the code works. That keeps the unit serviced weekly without extra hassle.
