90% male construction crew: can we use more urinals?

We have a 60-person road crew, almost all men, working a 10-hour day, five days a week for the next three months. The site is gravel and dirt, and the vacuum truck can pull right up to the units. Right now we have three standard portable toilets and one ADA-compliant unit to meet the cluster rule. With this many guys, the lines get long at breaks. I'm wondering if swapping one standard unit for a portable urinal would speed things up. Has anyone tried that on a male-dominated site? Does it actually cut down on wait times, or does it just create a different bottleneck? Also, would the rental company even offer that swap on a monthly contract?

Yes, adding a portable urinal to a mostly male construction crew can reduce wait times by adding more fixtures for peak use periods. The current setup with three standard portable toilets and one ADA-compliant portable toilet meets the minimum requirements of OSHA 1926.51 for 60 workers, but it does not account for the concentration of use during breaks. A portable urinal provides a faster option specifically for liquid waste, which can help clear lines more quickly. On a male-dominated site, this swap often works because men will use the urinal, leaving the full-service units available for others. The rental company should offer the swap on a monthly contract, as they typically adjust the unit mix to suit the site's needs. The key is to ensure the total number of fixtures (toilets plus urinals) meets or exceeds the OSHA standard. With a crew of 60, you need a minimum of two toilet seats and one urinal, which your current setup provides. Adding a urinal would increase the total fixture count, which should improve throughput without creating a new bottleneck, as urinal use is typically faster.
