Bathroom remodel: Will a porta potty work for 4 months in rainy weather?

Our house is getting its only bathroom gutted starting fall 2026, and we’re planning to rent a standard portable toilet for the whole four-month job. It will be just my partner and me using it. The rental company said they can do weekly service visits. My big worry is the weather, this is Portland, Oregon, and it will be sitting on our gravel driveway through months of rain and damp. Will a standard unit hold up for that long without getting gross or damaged? What should I ask the rental company about their units' durability and any extra steps for wet conditions? Also, is weekly service enough for two people over four months, or should I push for more frequent cleanings?

Yes, a standard portable toilet will hold up fine for a four-month bathroom remodel with just two people, even through a Portland rainy stretch on gravel.

Weekly service visits are plenty for two users. The holding tank on a standard unit is built for job-site crews, so light residential use barely fills between visits. Lock the weekly route for the whole rental so you are not rebooking every few weeks.

Rain is mostly a placement and access problem, not a durability one. These cabins sit outside year-round on construction sites. What matters is that the driveway pad drains so the unit is not sitting in a puddle, the door swing stays clear of mud, and the vacuum truck can still reach it when the gravel is wet. If the driveway softens into ruts, have them park on the firmer edge and hose from there instead of chewing up the gravel.

Ask the rental company three things up front: whether they stake or chock the unit if wind picks up, what happens on a missed visit if contractor trucks block the driveway, and whether each service includes fresh deodorizer plus a floor and seat wipe, not just a pump-out. On a long home rental that last bit is what keeps the unit usable instead of sticky.
