Can I clean the porta potty myself between weekly services?

We are halfway through a six-week bathroom remodel. The rental company drops a standard portable toilet on our driveway every Friday afternoon and pumps it the following Friday morning. It is just my wife, me and our two kids using it, but by day four the smell in the unit is noticeable, especially when it is warm outside. I do not want to bother the rental company for an extra service visit. Can I clean the porta potty myself between the weekly services? I am thinking of rinsing the inside with a garden hose and maybe wiping it down. Is that a bad idea? Could I accidentally damage the unit or make the odor problem worse by adding plain water to the holding tank?

You can wipe the seat, floor, and walls between weekly services, but do not rinse the holding tank with a garden hose.

We ran a standard unit on our driveway through a bath remodel too. Light surface cleaning is fine. A damp rag and a mild cleaner on the seat and floor keep the cabin usable without touching the tank. What you want to avoid is flooding the holding tank with plain water. That dilutes the blue deodorizer charge the service crew put in on Friday, and the smell often comes back worse by the next warm afternoon.

Do not pour household drain cleaners or bleach into the tank either. Those can fight the treatment chemistry and leave you with a worse odor problem than you started with. If day four is already rough for a family of four in warm weather, call for a midweek pump instead of DIY tank work. The weekly Friday cycle is normal for light home use, but heat and kid traffic fill the tank faster than the calendar suggests.
