Rain keeps getting inside our remodel porta potty and soaking the toilet paper. Is that a broken unit?

We've had a standard portable toilet in the side yard for about three weeks while our only bathroom gets redone. This week we got two days of wind and sideways rain, and both mornings the toilet paper roll was soaked through and there was a puddle on the floor by the door.

The unit sits on a little slope toward the house, and the door faces the direction the storms come from. I can't see an obvious crack in the roof but there's a vent up top and a gap along the bottom of the door.

Is some water getting in normal in heavy weather, or does this mean the unit is damaged and should be swapped? Would turning the door away from the wind fix it, and is that something I ask the driver to do on the next service visit? Meanwhile we're keeping the paper in a zip bag.

Some water intrusion in a standard portable toilet during heavy wind and rain is normal, not necessarily a broken unit. The vent stack on the roof and the gap under the door are standard design features for ventilation and drainage, but they can allow wind-driven rain to enter. The slope toward the house may also contribute to water pooling near the door.

Turning the door away from the prevailing wind can help reduce water entry. You can ask the driver on the next service visit to reposition the unit if the ground allows for stable placement on level ground. Keep using the zip bag for toilet paper to avoid waste.

If water continues to enter heavily after repositioning, inspect the roof seam and door seal for cracks or damage. A rental company should swap a unit with structural damage, but minor leakage in storms is common with standard units.
