Restroom trailer freshwater tank freezing prevention in November 2026

I'm renting a four-stall restroom trailer for an outdoor wedding in late November. The forecast says overnight lows near freezing. The trailer has a 100-gallon fresh water tank and a separate waste tank. It'll be on a grassy field with good truck access for delivery and pumping. The event runs about six hours with a full bar and dinner service. I need to keep the freshwater system from freezing solid. What's the best way to prevent ice in the tank and lines without ruining the plumbing? Do I need a heated holding tank or just antifreeze? How do you handle this for a one-day event?

For a one-day event with overnight lows near freezing, drain the freshwater tank and lines completely after the event to prevent freezing damage. Do not use antifreeze in the freshwater system, it contaminates the water supply and is unsafe for guests. Restroom trailers are not designed for antifreeze in the potable water lines.

Before the event, confirm with your rental company that they winterize the unit for cold weather. Most operators will pre-treat the system or provide guidance. Since your event is only six hours, the freshwater tank likely won't freeze during use if temperatures are above freezing. After the last guest, have the operator or a designated person drain the tank via the outlet valve and open all faucets to clear the lines. This is standard practice for short-term events in cold conditions.

A heated holding tank is unnecessary for a single overnight near freezing. The key is post-event drainage to protect the plumbing. Always coordinate with your rental company on their cold weather procedures, they handle this regularly and will ensure the unit is prepared.
