I've been hauling waste for 16 years, and 2026 is shaping up to be the toughest yet for disposal. My vacuum truck makes the same trips, but the costs at the wastewater treatment plant keep climbing. They're citing higher energy bills and stricter pretreatment rules, which means more testing and paperwork for me. On top of that, some counties are tightening their land application permits, cutting down on the places I can legally dump. I've had to renegotiate my disposal contracts twice this year just to keep my routes running. It's eating into margins that were already thin.

The biggest challenge in 2026 is the same for many operators: disposal costs at wastewater treatment plants are rising sharply due to their own higher energy costs and stricter pretreatment regulations. This means more testing and paperwork before they will accept a load from my vacuum truck.

Land application sites are also becoming harder to use as counties tighten permits. The main pressure in my area is the combination of these two issues, which forces longer drives and more administrative work for every load. There are no real workarounds that avoid the cost. We have to absorb some of it, but a portion is passed to the customer through the service visit fee. The final price for a rental is driven by the unit type, the service frequency, and the distance to the disposal site. A standard portable toilet on weekly service is the baseline; a restroom trailer or a unit needing more frequent pumping due to heavy use costs more to service. You just have to factor the rising disposal fee into every job now.
