Porta Potty Forum

Porta potty doors at our pumpkin patch slam shut hard. Can the spring be loosened, or is it tight on purpose?

We run a small pumpkin patch on weekends through Halloween and have two standard units by the parking area. The doors on both close with a real bang the second you let go. Last Saturday a little boy caught his fingers when his mom let the door swing shut behind her. He's fine, but it scared everybody.

Is that spring tension something the driver can back off on the next service visit, or is it set that tight on purpose so the door latches and doesn't blow open? I don't want to fix one problem and create another with the door flapping in the wind.

We still have two weekends left. Would a sign on the door telling parents to hold it closed behind them be enough, or should I ask them to swap in different units? Curious what people with lots of kids around have done.

The spring tension is set tight on purpose to ensure the door latches securely and does not blow open in wind. A standard unit door must close firmly to prevent odors from escaping and to maintain privacy. However, the tension can often be adjusted by the service technician during a service visit.

For your pumpkin patch, contact your rental company and explain the safety issue with children. They may loosen the spring slightly or install a door damper to slow the closing action. A temporary sign reminding parents to hold the door is a good immediate step, but it relies on user attention. If adjustments aren't sufficient, requesting units with softer-closing mechanisms or swapping for different models is a reasonable solution, especially with high foot traffic from families. Prioritize safety over convenience to avoid repeat incidents.
