Evening graduation party: do the porta potties need lighting, or is path lighting enough?

We're hosting a backyard graduation party in late October for about 80 people. Ceremony starts around 5pm, then food and hanging out until maybe 10 or 11. The house bathrooms stay reserved for family, so we're planning on a couple of standard units plus a handwash station out by the side yard where the truck can reach.

What I'm stuck on is the evening part. Once it gets dark, the units will be away from the patio lights. Do rental companies usually include battery lights inside the units, or do we need to put our own path lights and something by the doors? I don't want guests fumbling with the latch in the dark.

Also curious if people usually put the units closer to the gathering area for night events, even if that means a longer hose pull for the vacuum truck on pickup Monday.

Rental companies do not include lighting inside standard portable toilets; you need to add your own path lighting and door lighting for evening events. The path lighting guides guests to the cluster, and a small solar light or battery-powered lantern at the door helps with the latch and interior visibility. Moving the units closer to the gathering area for a night event is common, but ensure the vacuum truck still has access for service. A longer hose pull may add to the service cost, as it requires more time and labor. For 80 people at a five to six hour event with alcohol, two standard units and one ADA-compliant unit meet the ADA cluster rule and guest comfort. Place the handwash station adjacent to the units with its own lighting.

  • Kim S. Brooke is right about door lighting. A dark interior is a trip hazard and discourages use. The ADA-compliant unit also needs a clear, well-lit path and turning space outside the door to be truly accessible.
