Unsupervised jobsite overnight: can we padlock the porta potty?

We're on a small residential addition with a standard portable toilet sitting in the side yard. Crew leaves around 4pm and nobody is back until morning. Twice this week we showed up to empty toilet paper and a drained hand sanitizer dispenser. Neighbor kids or random walkers, hard to say.

Is it normal to put a padlock on the door overnight? The unit has a hasp. I'm worried the rental company will say no, or that locking it means the service truck can't open it if they show up early. Also not sure if locking it creates a mess when someone on the crew needs it before the key gets handed around.

Has anyone locked theirs overnight on an unsupervised site, and did the rental company care?

Yes, you can padlock a standard portable toilet overnight on an unsupervised jobsite. The hasp is there for that reason. Inform your rental company you are locking it so they know to call for access on service days. They will not object if you coordinate.

Locking prevents vandalism and theft of supplies like toilet paper and hand sanitizer dispenser contents. It stops unauthorized use by neighbors or passersby.

Give the key to the first crew member arriving each morning. They unlock it before work starts. This avoids anyone being locked out during the day. The service truck arrives on scheduled days, so you can have someone onsite to unlock it or provide a key lockbox code if arranged in advance.

I lock units on all my residential jobs. It cuts down on mess and cost for refills. Just communicate with the rental operator about service timing.
