Vandalism on our November 2026 site: how to secure the porta potty door?

We have a standard portable toilet on a commercial site in Phoenix. It's a 12-week job with 40 crew members. The unit sits on level dirt, and the vacuum truck can pull right up to it. Someone keeps breaking the latch at night. I've had to call for repairs twice this month. I need a way to lock the door after hours without making it hard for the crew to use during the day. What's the best way to secure a porta potty door against vandals? Should I ask the rental company for a different latch type?

Install a sturdy hasp and padlock on the outside of the door, and give the key or combination only to your crew foreman or trusted leads. A standard portable toilet has a simple plastic latch that is easy to break, but a metal hasp with a lock is much more durable. The crew can use the unit normally during the day by leaving it unlocked, and you can secure it each night after the last worker leaves. This is a common solution on construction sites with vandalism issues. You could also ask the rental company if they offer a unit with a reinforced metal latch as an option, though that might not be available on every model. Make sure the lock is visible to deter vandals before they attempt to break in. Avoid internal locks that could trap someone inside or complicate daytime access.

  • Tyler R. We do the hasp and padlock too. Key thing is a shared lockbox on site so the morning lead can open it without calling you, and never leave a padlock on during the day or someone will shove the door.
