Porta Potty Forum

One of my framers dropped his phone down the jobsite porta potty. Will the service driver fish it out, or is it gone?

Happened this morning around break. Guy leaned over to grab toilet paper and the phone slid right out of his shirt pocket into the tank. He can still hear it buzzing, which is honestly the worst part.

Our regular pump day isn't until Thursday. A couple of the guys are already talking about rigging a magnet on a rake handle, and I'd rather nobody do that on my site.

So a few questions for anyone who's dealt with this:

  1. Will the route driver actually try to pull it out with the vacuum hose or a grabber, or do they just tell you it's a loss?
  2. Is it worth calling for an early service visit, or is the phone toast after sitting in there a few days anyway?
  3. Should we lock the unit until then so nobody keeps using it on top of the phone?

Rather handle it the right way than have someone fall in a hole over a phone.

The route driver will not fish out the phone. The vacuum hose on a vacuum truck is designed to pump liquid waste only, and operators have a strict policy against retrieving items from the holding tank due to health risks and liability. Do not attempt to retrieve it yourself with a magnet or rake, this risks injury and contaminating the site.

Call for an early service visit to pump the unit immediately. The phone is already damaged by exposure to waste and deodorizer, and leaving it until Thursday increases the chance of clogging the pump or causing odors. Lock the unit now to prevent further use, which would only bury the phone deeper and complicate servicing. Explain the situation to the rental company; they may charge extra for the unscheduled trip, but it avoids bigger problems like a blocked tank or a safety incident.
