Wasps built a nest up by the porta potty vent on our framing job. Spray it ourselves or wait for the rental company?

We're framing a two story house and the standard unit has been on site since August. This week the guys noticed wasps going in and out right where the vent pipe comes through the roof of the unit, and one of my carpenters got stung on the hand grabbing the door yesterday. Now half the crew won't go in it and they're driving to the gas station on break, which kills a good 20 minutes every time.

My first thought was to grab a can of wasp spray from the truck and hit it at dusk. But I don't know if spraying that stuff down the vent messes with the tank, or if the rental company would rather handle it themselves on service day, which isn't until next Tuesday.

Anyone dealt with this before? Is it on us or on them, and is it safe to spray around the vent?

Call the rental company immediately, do not spray the nest yourself. The wasp spray chemicals can contaminate the holding tank and interfere with the deodorizer, and the rental company may have a specific protocol or liability concerns. They will send a technician to handle the nest safely, often on an emergency service call outside the regular schedule. This is typically their responsibility since it involves the unit's structure and vent. In the meantime, mark the unit off-limits with caution tape to prevent more stings. For your crew size, OSHA 1926.51 requires at least one toilet for up to 20 workers, so losing access to the only unit violates the standard. Consider asking the rental company about a temporary second unit if the delay will be long.
