Does a framing crew need a hand wash station next to the porta potty?

For a framing-only crew, OSHA 1926.51 does not automatically require a standalone hand wash station next to the toilet. The washing-facilities section in 1926.51(f) kicks in harder when people are applying paints, coatings, herbicides, insecticides, or other operations where contaminants can be harmful. Straight lumber and fasteners usually sit outside that list.

What you do need is toilets kept clean and sanitary under 1926.51, and soap plus water so people can wash after using the standard unit. The jug and soap dispenser inside the door can meet that if they stay filled. Inspectors I have dealt with flag an empty jug or missing soap faster than they flag the absence of a freestanding sink on a small wood frame job.

That said, most GCs still roll a separate hand wash station once the crew is eating on site. It keeps muddy hands out of the toilet cabin and gives a better rinse before lunch than a jug on the floor. With eight framers on one lot, I would add the station for practical reasons even if the letter of 1926.51(f) is not the driver.

If safety pushes the issue, ask whether they are citing 1926.51(f) or a company hygiene rule. Those are different conversations.
